New Orleans Blues: Part Deux

I wonder if New Orleans really teems with the decadence Poppy Z. Brite and her goth cohorts flavor their novels so richly. I have never been a big fan of their blood-and-sex-starved vampires (I prefer werewolves), and will not miss them if they aren’t tangibly there. But I am intrigued about the infamous absinthe Van Gogh, Verlaine and Wilde went crazy about. What is this strange spirit that could drive one to high art and then, madness?

Around the turn of the century, after observing a subset of alcoholism referred to as “absinthism”, and noting that heavy absinthe users had a propensity toward madness and suicide, by the second decade of this century it became banned in the Western world, unfairly lumped in with opiates, cocaine, and marijuana when it is, in fact, just another alcoholic beverage (although one with unique properties).

-Chuck Taggart, from “What is Absinthe? And What does it have to do with New Orleans?”

Evidence for the mind-altering effects of absinthe is largely anecdotal and the frequently quoted first-hand descriptions have come from artists and poets who would perhaps be expected to be fanciful in their descriptions.

-Ian Hutton, from “Myth, Reality and Absinthe”

But sometimes, people can get drunk purely on a city’s wild beauty. One day, I will leave all my inhibitions behind and lose myself to the intoxication that is New Orleans.

The Mardi Gras beads were a gift from Jhoann , who is no stranger to lunacy and mind-altering substances (e.g. Mr. Super Clear).

  1. LOL! I wore a MASK when using Mr Super Clear, thank you very much! That stuff STINKS!

So, Jhoey wants to lose her clothing and run thru Bourbon St. streaking everyone? Oh yeaaaaah! Very New Orleans! LOL!

Wow, Artemis said she wants to pose with Uno next…only the beads she’s got in mind aren’t for wearin’…!!!!

  2. Those are some awesome shots! Your dolls and your photgraphy are goregous!!! And I have been to New Orleans, and while Poppy isn’t all that popular (at least when I was there about 10 years ago) Anne Rice IS as well as Marie Lavoe. ;)

  3. great shots!! I love it!~ \m/^0^\m/ to joey ^^ do you use photoshop for editing or is it straight from the camera?

BTW uno..that jan is really scary ( you know how fangirls can go wild…)

  4. Artemis, you better be true to what you say when we meet. I bind you to your every word! >: D

  5. Thanks, Mercy! (^^) I’ve always liked the lesser known. And I tuned out of Anne Rice when her books started being made into disappointing movies.

  6. Thanks, Himiko. I’m too lazy to edit. I just use Photoshop to add the Fully_Articulated label. (^^)

I’m sorry about Jan. She’s scared Uno off the tagboard, too. I’ve thought of banning her, but I’ve to be fair to everyone. Thanks for your patience.

  7. Uno, since you prefer werewolves, you should have Joey pick you up a copy of Nancy A. Collins’ “Wild Blood” (if you don’t own it already, I mean). I read it a few years ago & thought it was awesome! Ms. Collins usually writes about vampires, but she does a lot of werewolf stuff, too. She is a very talented writer.

    *Giggles* ….

    S-t-e-a-m-y pictures….. had to wipe my glasses clean… hee-heee
    …..

  9. Thanks for the tip, Jenny! My favorite is Caitlin Kiernan’s “Low Red Moon”. Have you read it?

I wonder why there are so many novels about vampires and so few of the werewolves! That sucks! (Pun intended!)

  10. joey: at least you’re not lazy to take pictures XD shinji is…after she failed her photography class last last semester ( actually she got INC she passed now hehe)

    about jan..lets just err…ignore her..I’m used to people like her~ hehe~

  11. That sounds really familiar, Uno. Off the top of my head I can’t recall if I’ve read it.

Most likely, there are fewer werewolf books cuz people find it harder to make them sexy. They find that women (& men) keep coughin up hairballs after long make-out sessions. :-p~~~

  12. Doggie-style! X-P

Have you read any book by Caitlin Kiernan? She’s a good read! (^^)

  13. Absinthe… the connection might be anne rice’ novel… don’t know really… *sighs* out of date comment… -_-
