Cebu, Bai*

Manx hopes she can go to Cebu one day. Perhaps to play for (or depending on her mood, with) the Cebuanos, who are very warm and welcoming to indie bands like Mistula. I also heard that Cebu has grandiose old churches that, to me, are very inviting. (Thanks to Joey’s fascination for idolatry, I am going to church regularly, except on Sundays, religious holidays or when there is a gathering of more than 3 prayerful people.) Lugosi is more interested in the graveyards and for some reason, danggit, a kind of mummified fish that stinks to high heavens when fried. But for now, we contend ourselves with Joey’s images of Cebu, which she took when she was there for the Philippine Advertising Congress a few years ago.

This little girl, Joey said, watched over her grandmother’s merchandise while she danced the tindera sinulog. On the patio of the Basilica del Santo Niño, women candle peddlers perform the ritual dance prayer on behalf of devotees who buy candles from them as an offering for petitions or for thanksgiving. Joey and her friends bought a few candles.

Joey recalls that some of the guitars she saw in Cebu might be the right size for us.
But then again, do I want to be seen playing a banjo?

*Bai is the Cebuano word for friend.

  1. Ahhhh, filipino way of life! I miss seeing it! I miss the islands! T_T Jhoey is lucky she’s been to Cebu! I never got the chance while in the Philippines!

  2. Oh! It reminds me of Ecuador.
I remember seeing the cathedrals in Ecuador, with all these old wood carvings with gold leaf and pews in the front that were hundreds of years old… I remember one was missing a stone somewhere, and there was a story that the builder was told to build the place in one day. He couldn’t, so he made a deal with the devil. The deal was the that the devils would build the cathedral in one day with the materials given to them. When the it was complete, the devil would take his soul.
So, the builder destroyed one block and the cathedral was never actually finished.

Sure ya do! You can do cool stuff with a banjo!

(I wonder what you can do with an electric banjo..)
