Hail to the Disciples!

Mistula is proud to have brilliant friends. They make miracles – like Baptized, the band’s latest video – possible.

It’s a small miracle to be able to convince grown men to play with dolls.

Eric Sanchez is not new to religious icons, having explored the same theme for his post-graduate thesis in London, Imahenasyon: The Visual Language of Folk Catholicism in the Philippines. Baptized, however, is Eric’s first full-length video for a rock band. The Design Director for Publicis Red Lion seem to have enjoyed making the video; he himself pickled the dolls’ heads in jars and hunted for the smallish green serpent in Cartimar.

The smallish green serpent, Eric realized, was not an easy hunt. The day he went to Cartimar, he phoned Joey and cried, “They’re selling me a goddamn python!”
“It’s easier and safer to find a plastic snake, believe me,” Joey told him.
But that early, Eric already had the making of a scrupulous director. “I don’t want a goddamn plastic snake! I don’t want this goddamn python either! I want a smallish green serpent!”

After dealing with some dubious personalities in Cartimar, Eric soon found what he was looking for. Joey first saw the smallish green serpent coiled in a plastic terrarium on the passenger’s seat of Eric’s car, listening to Guns n’ Roses’ Welcome to the Jungle. “That should give him the attitude we need for the video,” Eric said. Joey promptly named him Slash.

Manx loved Slash instantly. The crew was supposed to let him go after the shoot, but Manx decided that they be together forever.

Mike Fallarme is the Director of Photography for Baptized. His other titles include Drag Racer, Y&R Art Director, Head Photographer for Lube and Certified Manx Fanboy.

Mike is no stranger to Mistula, having photographed the band for several magazine and TV features. As always, Mike brought a lot of innovative ideas to the video, most of which caused me a lot of suffering.

Help.

Somebody. Anybody.

Mike’s friend and erstwhile boss, now the head photographer and owner of Grasshopper Studio, Neil Jinco, lent us studio space and additional equipment to shoot Baptized. The last photo on this entry and those of Slash are shot by Papa Neil.
Xavier Pales, Neil’s partner, completed the photography requirements for the video. Thanks for the help, Seber!

Rainier Pengson, director of Mistula’s first video, Mulat, dubbed the video for release. Thanks to him, Baptized will soon be seen on local MTV and MYX.
And what would a rock band be without pretty girls? Our love to Nicky Lucasan for giving Manx an extra pair of hands and Edith Esguerra for taking care of the Mistula Covers.

To the people who inspire us with encouraging messages or challenge us with criticism, thank you. You help us rise a little higher. Nakaahon din kami.
NOTE: The recent lack of updates is caused by the Mistula roadie Joey being confined to bed, heavily guarded by her Mom. (She did try to sneak away a few times.) While her actions and internet privileges are now limited, she will still try to make sure the Mistula sites remain active. Thanks for the emails and for keeping tabs on us!

November 25th, 2007 - 00:48
Only a miracle can save me from yellowing after being exposed to outrageous watts of studio lights.
Yep, having friends work with you is a lot of fun! Or so Joey thinks. I certainly didn’t have a lot of fun shooting this video.
November 20th, 2007 - 23:34
Get well soon, Joey! ^^ Cheers to you all for a job well done!
November 25th, 2007 - 00:57
Thanks very much, Krishna!
November 21st, 2007 - 03:11
I think the music video came out amazing! All the swaying hands would’ve disturbed me if I wasn’t so familiar with these dolls already though XD.
Oh no, you got sick, Joey? I hope you get better soon!
November 25th, 2007 - 01:04
Thanks, Nadia! It’s always a pleasure to disturb people.
I did experience a major life shift, but I’m better now!

Nice to see the faces behind the cool video. Get well soon Miss Joey.
November 25th, 2007 - 01:13
Most of these faces frowned at this uncalled-for exposé!
Especially when I intentionally did not include my own, haha!
Thanks for the get-well message here and on SMS, JayJay!
November 21st, 2007 - 08:59
Get well soon Miss Joey. And I hope Uno won’t be put in that kind of torture again.
November 21st, 2007 - 15:54
torture logusi *hides*
November 25th, 2007 - 01:16
But Lugosi is the mastermind of this band. Which explains why Uno is always being tortured.
Thanks for the well-wishes!

Three cheers for the unsung heros of Mistula! (who deserve far more than three cheers). It’s wonderful to see the behind-the-scenes magicians who make dolls move and play like the rock stars they are.
And Slash, we will love you always! Now if only I could could convince future house mates to let me bring home one of your cousins…
♥ ♥ ♥ !
November 25th, 2007 - 04:06
And the unsung heroes are not too happy to make this curtain call! I did receive a lot of phone-in protests. Sigh.
If you want Manx to make a testimonial for you, let us know, Molly! She’d be more than happy to help you convince your future housemates to adopt a not-so-ordinary pet.

I really hope I could find some photos of people behind Mistula(especially the owners and the staffs) I wanted to create some artworks about them. I also need them as references for my novel. (My Gulay! Writing a novel really needs lots of research!) -_-
December 11th, 2007 - 11:13
i salute for that!!!

Its wonderful to see how everything is made from behind the camera–and then see it all put together in the end.
The Baptized video is a breathtaking and beautiful work of imagery and sound. And that shot, of you Uno, under the “water”… Oh, I had wondered how that turned out. Now I see, and I never would have guessed!
