Manikako’s MAAD Saturday
If you don’t see all 28 photos, please refresh your browser.
The day started with a locked bathroom. The owner of the house, Itsy, left for the gym, and left the luckless Manikako girls unable to take a shower. No one knew how the bathroom got locked – and no one knew how to open it. Trisha blamed the hungry ghosts; it is the Hungry Ghost month and the usually meticulously-swept Singapore is littered with offerings of food to dead ancestors. But the hungry ghosts cannot be bribed to open the bathroom and Manikako had to be at the red dot design museum at 10AM, so Gabie had to do this:

Thanks to Gabie’s heroic efforts and waifish figure, the bathroom was unlocked and the Manikako booth opened at MAAD with its fresh-smelling crew just in time.

Manikako’s second booth at MAAD had space for dollmaking workshops. It kept Dollmaster Gabie stitching all day.

Her first customer was Noah, who Joey coerced to order a Manikako of himself. When he saw that Gabie had stitched Jimi Hendrix on his Manikako’s tiny shirt, he exclaimed, “You guys are insane!”

There is one who was nonplussed by all the laughter and cheer. Lugosi told us he came to meet someone important, and that’s that. Even Trisha was very careful around him.

Our first resin visitor was Steffi’s Sana. She sat with us as Steffi tinkered around the Manikako booth.

Pets are warmly welcomed at MAAD, and Joey found this little fellow quite adorable. His name is Miko.

And she took a picture of us together because she said we look alike. Arf?

A little later after lunch, more resin friends started to arrive. Here’s a familiar face: Almark’s Ethramella.

With Ethramella is Furrsia, who seemed disappointed to find out that the Red Lobo was not with us.

It was awesome find out that Furrsia likes listening to Mistula.

Almark kept us company the entire day, like he did the first time Manikako had a booth at MAAD. He also bought coffee for Joey and watched over us as she worked. Salamat, p’re!

More resin visitors came as the day progressed. The little ones are Kagari’s Nana and Ayame.

Joey could not resist stealing a shot of this lady. She looks like Imogen Heap!

And Itsy could not resist sneaking into this shot.

Poor little Nana is getting tired.

Poor Lugosi is running out of social skills.
Later in the afternoon, our booth was bustling with friends new and old. There were Trisha’s friends, Gabie’s friends, Itsy’s friends, Joey’s friends and friends of their friends. Orders started pouring in, and the Manikako crew had to eat lunch as they worked. I tried my best to help.

Lugosi told me later that Si Ye came with Mae and Djinn, but he thought it best not to disturb me as I was too busy ogling the pretty customers. What a fiend.

But he was right; there were a lot of pretty customers!

Manikako became busier as the end of the day drew closer. I was so caught up in the bustle – greeting customers, answering questions, posing for people – that I lost track of the time, and our first MAAD day was over before I knew it. I hope I did not miss someone important.

MAAD SUNDAY is coming right up.

September 12th, 2009 - 14:32
I think the title of Manx Junior should belong to Trin. She’s got amazing poseability and a sassy personality. The next generation!
September 13th, 2009 - 22:55
Then I shall look forward to the future.
September 13th, 2009 - 22:54

I love that photo of the woman with the rose hairpiece! So vintage! X3
September 13th, 2009 - 23:01
Those hairpieces were being sold at MAAD. They reminded us of Krishna’s flamboyant flowers, actually.
September 12th, 2009 - 11:12
… Now it’s Sana’s turn to look constipated. Or frozen. Whichever. XD Sunday’s the official impromptu meet day, it seems, though both days were equally awesome.
Uno> You did it! She’s uploading them really quickly now. ^^
September 13th, 2009 - 23:12
I think Saturday is Old Friends Meet Day, and Sunday is New Friends Meet Day.
September 12th, 2009 - 11:22
Add-on: The Hungry Ghost month is almost over, I believe. Just this morning, my dad swore that he’d remove a 5-cent coin from a cup before filling it up. He came back and saw that the coin was at the bottom of the cup again. >_<
And Gabie’s awesome at making lookalikes!
September 13th, 2009 - 23:11
Ah, good thing the ghosts aren’t as hungry in the Philippines.
On the way from the airport, the cab driver was telling us how we should observe the holiday. He didn’t use to believe in the ghosts, he said, until he had an accident that convinced him otherwise.
I believe in ghosts! And I believe in Gabie, the goddess of soft and small things.
September 12th, 2009 - 11:48
Whoa Gabie is awesome! O_O *applauds*
Lovely lovely photos…Uno you do look like Miko!!!
( TSUKISOU TT_TT )

Well, I kind of figured it was you, Nix.
September 12th, 2009 - 14:40
OMG! Gabie! *worships* The legendary doll seamstress saves the day once again! Grabe, sobrang hectic ah.
There were so many resins! I hope my girl and I could meet them someday when I’m old enough to travel by myself.
September 13th, 2009 - 23:28
Why travel on your own? It’s more fun to travel with friends! I don’t think I will ever want to travel without Joey even if she keeps throwing me into the cabin baggage.

Hey, you can always meet the Red Lobo in the Philippines. Just jump into Almark’s luggage the next time he comes home!
