Duende’s ADventure (Part 1)

The best thing about being small, Duende told me, is that you’re always bound to have big adventures.

“All aboard!”
Last November, Duende traveled with Joey and Rey to Subic Bay for the 2009 Philippine Advertising Congress, a five-day convention about all things advertising and marketing. Duende knows nothing about advertising or marketing. She came to see tigers.

“Are we there yet?”
Duende loves animals, especially those that are endangered. She must be the world’s smallest eco-activist. She heard of the tigers in Zoobic Safari, and wants to see if they are being treated properly. If they are only being thrown occassional chicken heads, Greenpeace is going to receive a colorful report written in crayons.

“Are we there yet?”

“Are we there yet?”

“What, no tigers?”

Keynote Speaker Enrique Zobel de Ayala opened the Congress with a speech about the importance of saving the environment but did not mention anything about tigers.
Duende didn’t understand why Joey and Rey preferred to sit through the boring talks listening to the world’s most brilliant creative minds than take her to Zoobic Safari. Surely the tigers are more important than ideas that change the world?

Mike Schallit is Joey’s creative hero. The Executive Creative Director of BBDO South Africa, he invented a solar-powered billboard that fed poor South African schoolchildren.

Kentaro Kimura, Co-CEO of Hakuhodo Kettle Japan, thought of turning Sony’s old banners into designer jeans. The jeans were sold right were the banners used to be: on the face of the Sony building in Tokyo. Salespeople had to rappel down the building whenever a customer bought one.

Presidential Adviser on Global Warming and Climate Change (OPACC) Heherson Alvarez and DENR Secretary Lito Atienza with Rey’s boss, Chief Creative Officer of BBDO Philippines, David Guerrero. The politicians were supposed to discuss climate change, but ended up talking about their personal achievements. Oh well.

Artist and comics illustrator James Jean was jet-lagged and sleepy and boring as hell, but his portfolio spoke volumes.

Rey, comics geek, was inspired to ask him a few questions.

And even asked for his signature.

Duende thinks tigers are far more impressive than humans. She hoped Joey and Rey will finally realize that there are more pressing things than having their IDs signed by James Jean or beating the crowd to the buffet table.

The problem with free food, Joey realized, is that everybody wants it.

Except for Duende, who stayed inside the hotel room because she doesn’t care about silly things like advertising or marketing or free food.

“So when are we going to save the tigers?”
COMING UP: Big wins and not-so-big cats.

March 9th, 2010 - 00:34
Gabie and Leo got to see the tigers at Zoobic Safari. (We didn’t as we were too tired!) They said they were quite healthy and happy. Duende need not worry.

Joey. is duende’s yours?
March 9th, 2010 - 14:29
NOBODY OWNS ME. I AM A FREE SPIRIT.
March 9th, 2010 - 16:52
oops. sorry:) great! got to like you even more
March 11th, 2010 - 16:07
Well, technically Joey owns her. She just refuses to believe it.
March 13th, 2010 - 10:43
aww. ok. understood. so it means, she’s with you ? just bit wondering. can she also sing? i mean with mistula?
March 15th, 2010 - 18:03
Yes, she’s part of the Fully Articulated crew but she’s not a member of Mistula, like Magpie, Veritas and Blanc. I also think it’s too irreverent, even for Mistula standards, to have a five-year old child in a heavy metal band.
March 16th, 2010 - 11:23
why not. she could be the very first 5 year old child rockstar:D
March 16th, 2010 - 18:06
I DON’T WANT TO BE A ROCKSTAR. I HAVE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO.
March 17th, 2010 - 08:45
duende. peace.
March 17th, 2010 - 15:25
Don’t misconstrue Duende’s typing. She believes activists should always write in capital letters.
March 19th, 2010 - 09:57
really? (LOL) SO I MUST START TYPING IN ALL CAPS.
March 9th, 2010 - 10:21
HAPPY FEET~!!!!!
March 9th, 2010 - 16:18
Duende loves Happy Feet!
March 9th, 2010 - 16:42
You’ll be saving them soon, Duende. You’ll be saving them soon.
